A minimum of thirteen people perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
