Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, before he publicly stated that the board had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Reports that his departure was imminent were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to determine if progress is being made or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Presence

A single player kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He was on the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were pushing for him to extend his stay a while longer. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team lacking backup options.

He signed initially when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
