Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
